Shorefield

A loud clap echoed through the dawn silence, stirring magpies from their perches in the gum trees surrounding the paddock between the pub and the four-storey apartment block. Thinking he’d heard gunshots, Dylan woke with a start, his heart in his throat. The men he’d watched exchanging drugs for a down payment from Angus claimed his mind’s eye. What if they were after him now, because Angus was so hell bent on the idea that he had stolen the stash? Not daring to draw a breath, he listened intently, wondering if he’d dreamt it or if the sound was real. If they were out for blood, how would they know he was here of all places? Another clap echoed. The realisation it was a car backfiring allowed him to take a much-needed breath.

The room was still dark, the blackout curtains doing a damn fine job except for the tiny sliver of light peeking through. With his adrenaline waning, Dylan took a few moments to get his bearings. He was still fully dressed, on the couch, and not where Leah had so desperately wanted him to be. He hazily recalled walking out of the loo and her planting a kiss firmly on his lips. She’d then tried to drag him to her bedroom but he’d bluntly refused. He liked her as a mate, but any more than that, no thank you. Leah had laughed off his rejection, saying she was only kidding. Her body language spoke of the opposite. Sophie was right. He needed to steer clear of Leah.

The run-in with Sophie claimed his thoughts. His heart pinched when he recalled the distraught look on her face when he’d told her to go home. If only she knew it had taken every bit of his strength to walk away from her when all he wanted to do was take her into his arms and kiss her heartache away. The sensation had shocked him to the very core, as too did her open acknowledgement of her feelings for him, but he couldn’t deny any of it, and in a way he couldn’t be mad with her – because he still loved her. Immensely. He’d tried and tried to let her go, given it his best shot to forget she even existed, but no matter how much he tried to shake her off, she had a hold on him that was never going to ease completely. He was starting to believe he would never truly be able to move past her.

And if that were the case?

Melancholy hung over him like a black cloud. He grimaced from the pounding behind his temples but at the same time felt he deserved a hangover. After watching Sophie disappear out of the pub’s front door, he’d stupidly drowned his sorrows. Turning on his side to ease out his aching lower back (couches were never a great place for a six-foot-something bloke to sleep), an empty pizza box tumbled to the floor and landed among a few empty beer bottles.
